Faiz Ahmed Faiz Centenary Celebration at SOAS

On the 17th September the Khalili lecture theatre at SOAS in London was packed with an audience there to celebrate the centenary of the birth of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, one of Pakistan’s most famous poets and intellectuals.

Presentations and readings by eminent persons such as Salima Hashmi, Ifktikhar Arif and Geeta Patel were followed by the launch of SOAS’s Centre for the Study of Contemporary Pakistan.  Particularly enjoyable was Ms Hashmi’s discussion of the recently discovered letters from Faiz to his wife Alys, written whilst he was incarcerated. The fragile documents are full of heartwarming prose and fascinating insights into their life together, some of which are still undergoing restoration and preservation.
